Answer both prompts. Remember to include a supporting quote.
1. In the chapter "With the Semanas" Siddhartha discovers the Second of the Four Noble Truths: Suffering arises from desire. How does Siddhartha react to this principle? When have you practiced self denial to attain a goal?
2. Why do you think Siddhartha abandons the ascetic life of the Semanas at the end of the chapter?

Assignment #1
As we have learned in our background readings, the Four Noble Truths are fundamental to the Buddhist belief system. The first of the Four Noble Truths, "Existence is suffering" arises in the first chapter with Siddhartha's discontent. Do you think that Siddhartha has reason to be dissatisfied with his life? Why or why not? Be sure to use a short supporting passage as evidence for your opinion, including the page number.
